I just found this site. I'm descended from the Iron Leonards and my genealogy book has Thomas Lennard father of James, Henry, and Philip Leonard listed as the third son of Sam(p)son Lennard and Margart de Fiennes the 11th Baroness Dacre.

Hey, Brad!

Just found Rick's site ... between the two of you (and Allen!) LEONARD is covered!

I was going to e-mail you about the DACRE thing so you've partly answered my question (re James and Henry). But do we know about Solomon?

Many thanks!

A couple of quick notes:

James and Henry Leonard did not descend from the Lennards of Dacre fame. Thomas, their father, was a fyner (iron refiner moving from furnace to furnace in iron foundries between Birmingham and Pontypool, not a gentleman living among the Lennards in Sussex. It's much more likely James and Henry Leonard descended from French ironworkers imported to England by King Henry VIII to bring the more advanced iron refining technology to England's service in warfare.
Solomon Leonard and James Leonard were not related -- y-dna tests of descendants have them in different haplogroups. James and Henry's y-dna marker pattern is almost identical among their descendants.
I've tracked down a descendant of the Leonards that Manning Leonard visited in Bristol, England. The descendant has done quite a study of the genealogy of his branch of the Bristol Leonards. He and a distant cousin of this branch had their y-dna tested, and, while they match each other, they are in a different haplogroup from and don't match either the descendants of Solomon or the descendants of James and Henry. (Sigh...) There are a lot of different Leonard families out there!

Hi E...
There's a very long and convoluted explanation, but essentially, you're talking about the same Iron Leonards family. Brothers James and Henry allegedly descended from King Edward III and Henry had a son Thomas, all of whom were involved in the iron business in Massachusetts. None of them, however, arrived on the Mayflower. Solomon Leonard, who may or may not be related, married a granddaughter of a Mayflower passenger and that's as close as the Leonards can come.

Hope that helps.
