Trees were scarce and the soil was poor. Uncle Dan had to double-up and sometimes splice them together to make a cabin work. It's even mentioned in some of the old county histories. The small timber was actually a half-mile from the cabin site and a neighbor had culled it the year prior, so pickin's were slim.
