  • Notes
    • From a page on Jemima LEONARD AXTELL in the "Annals of the Leonard-Hutchinson Families" by Jennie Leoanrd Hutchinson:

Henry Axtel was a blacksmith by trade. After the birth of their second child, he and his father-in-law, Benjamin Leonard resolved to move into the wilderness of New Jersey... The Leonards and the Axtells settled in Morris Co. in the township of Mendham, about two miles south-est of where the village of Mendham now stands (in 1949). This migratio took place about 1740 or '41. In the History of MOrris County, Henry Axtell is spoken of as "Henry the Blacksmith." He died about 1753, aged thrity-eight years, leaving Jemima and six children.
