  Birth & Death dates via tombstone. From The Mount Vernon Hawkeye-Record and Lisbon Hearld 23 April 1964, in an article entitled "Beranek's Hardware Half Century in Business Follows the Trend from Buttonhooks to 'Beatles'" "... That was in March 1914, when Gilbert and his father J.E. Beranek, purchased an implement store located on the present site of the Rahn clinic from T.I. Mithcell. The senior father-son team operated as an implement, pump, and buggy business until 1920 when they began adding paint, housewares, and hardware items. Since then, innovations within the store have closely paralleled -- and in many times led -- the rapid pace set by consumer demand. Highlighting the 50 years were these major events: - 1928 - A cousin of Gilbert Beranek, Edward, joined the firm. Maytag washers and Atwater-Kent radios join the rapidly-expanding line of merchandise.
